Windsor City FC Set for League1 Ontario Opener vs. Unionville Milliken SC After Cup Thriller

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 16, 2025

WINDSOR, ON — Windsor City FC kicks off its 2025 League1 Ontario campaign this Friday, April 18 at 7:30 PM with a highly anticipated home matchup against Unionville Milliken SC at Acumen Stadium. The club enters league play riding a wave of momentum after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Guelph United in the League1 Cup on Sunday—an afternoon to remember for players and fans alike.

The 0-0 draw in regulation time was decided from the spot, where goalkeeper Denys Cuevas emerged as the hero, helping to secure Windsor's first cup win since 2015—and their first under new head coach Gabriel Poulino.

“It’s always huge to get that first win under your belt and start the season on the right foot,” said Poulino. “It’s still early—players are learning about each other, building chemistry, figuring out how everyone plays. For a first outing together, I think they did really well.”

Cuevas’ performance was nothing short of spectacular. After a solid display through 90 minutes, he stepped up again in the shootout to deliver two crucial saves—a moment he says he’ll never forget.

“Honestly, it was surreal. Words can’t really describe it,” said Cuevas. “We were celebrating, everyone was around me. The energy was electric, the whole environment was just insane. I hope it’s the first of many moments like that. It’s a long season so I’m just focused on keeping it going.”

A Windsor City FC product, Cuevas has been with the club for nearly five years, rising through the lower teams. His breakout performance on Sunday earned him a spot on League1 Ontario’s Team of the Week.

“It feels amazing. I'm really grateful to Coach Gabe for giving me the opportunity to prove myself,” Cuevas added. “It’s just proof that hard work really does pay off. But now the hardest part is staying consistent—building on this and continuing to perform at this level.”

Windsor’s next test is Friday night’s league opener against a dangerous Unionville Milliken SC, who also won their cup opener. They’ll be led by star striker George Akpabio, one of the top forwards in the province, who tallied 11 goals last season.

“They’re going to come at us hard—just like every team in this league,” said Poulino. “For us, the focus has to be internal. At the end of the day, it comes down to effort. The team that wants it more usually wins. Simple as that.”
