Windsor, ON – Following a challenging opening to the 2025 League1 Ontario Championship Division campaign, Windsor City FC is back in action this Sunday, April 27, looking to bounce back in a big way as they host Guelph United at Acumen Stadium, located on the St. Clair College campus. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
The home side is eager to turn the page following a defeat to Unionville Milliken SC in the season opener. Head coach Gabriel Poulino believes the loss was an early lesson for his squad.
“They came out here, they had a goal just like us,” Poulino said. “This was a good wake-up call for the group. Hopefully, it will bring us together and enable us to fight better.”
Windsor City FC will face a familiar opponent in Guelph United — a team they recently eliminated in a dramatic penalty shootout during cup play, thanks in large part to goalkeeper Denys Cuevas, who made two crucial saves from the spot.
Despite the recent win over Guelph, Poulino is not underestimating Sunday’s visitors.
“Guelph is a good team and we can never take them lightly,” he noted. “Given that they ended up losing to us last game — which means they have something to prove — we just have to be ready.”
With lessons learned from the season opener and the motivation to respond in front of their home supporters, Windsor City is aiming for a statement performance this weekend.
“We need to come out with fire right from the get-go and not back down,” said Poulino. “We have a lot to build on. Hopefully, we'll be able to fix the mistakes that we need to fix and get a good result going forward.”
